The 2026 season is off to a fantastic start for Rankin's Cricket Club, with strong performances across the senior section, exciting opportunities for young players and one of the healthiest levels of participation the club has seen in years.
After a long winter of preparation, anticipation was high when league cricket returned in May, with the 1st XI competing in Division 3 and the 2nd XI in Division 10 of the T-Rippon Mid Essex League.
Since then, there has been plenty for members and supporters to celebrate.
The 1st XI have built impressive momentum, recording four victories from their opening fixtures. Standout performances have come from across the squad, with Ollie Cousen's unbeaten century helping secure a dramatic win at Navestock, while Alfie Young has continued his excellent form with a series of match-winning contributions, including a superb 93 against High Easter.
The bowling attack has also impressed, with Ben Murray, Thomas Dean and Sahas Gangireddy all playing important roles in securing victories and helping the side establish itself near the top end of the table.
The 2nd XI have shown tremendous resilience throughout the opening weeks of the season. Victories over SOS&EMT and Benfleet demonstrated the depth of talent within the squad, with experienced players and youngsters combining effectively.
One of the highlights was the memorable 111-run partnership between father and son duo Sandeep and Sriyan Gangireddy, while several younger players have continued to make significant contributions with both bat and ball. Sahas Gangireddy's explosive 66 against Willow Herbs was a particular reminder of the exciting talent coming through the ranks at Rankin's.
Beyond the league sides, the club's friendly teams have provided valuable opportunities for players of all ages and experience levels to represent the club.
Perhaps the most significant milestone of the season so far came when Rankin's fielded four senior teams on the same day for the first time in more than a decade. This achievement reflects the continued growth of the club and the commitment of players, volunteers and supporters who have helped create a welcoming environment for everyone who wants to play cricket.
The friendly sides have also provided opportunities for several young players to make their senior cricket debuts. Arvin Singh, Aiden Wilson and James Sillett all took their first steps into senior cricket this season, gaining valuable experience alongside established club members.
The club has also continued to demonstrate the strong family atmosphere that makes Rankin's special. Earlier in the season, Damien, Angela and Aiden Wilson became the club's first recorded father, mother and son combination to play together in the same senior match, creating a memorable moment in the club's history.
Across the senior section, youth players continue to make a significant impact. Players from the junior programme are progressing confidently into adult cricket, proving that the pathway from youth cricket to senior cricket is stronger than ever.
The growing connection between different sections of the club has also been clear to see. Rivermaiden Dinushi Perera has featured regularly in senior cricket and produced a number of outstanding performances, including figures of 4-11 against Eastwood and a remarkable 5-12 against Billericay St John. Her success is another example of how opportunities across the club are helping players continue their development and challenge themselves.
While victories are always welcome, the biggest success story so far has been the strength of the club as a whole. Senior players, juniors, parents, families and Rivermaidens have all contributed to a positive and inclusive environment that is helping cricket thrive at Rankin's.
With plenty of cricket still to come throughout the summer, there is every reason to be excited about what lies ahead.
