The 2026 season is gathering pace and there is plenty to celebrate for the Rivermaidens as the squad continues to grow, develop and make its mark both on and off the field.
The season began with friendly victories against Eastwood Vixens and Old Southendian and Southchurch Cricket Club (OSSCC) Seagals, but the scorelines only tell part of the story.
For several of our newest and youngest players, these matches marked their first ever appearances in Rivermaidens colours. Making your cricket debut can be daunting, but every player stepped onto the field with enthusiasm, determination and a huge smile. Seeing those players step up and gain valuable match experience was one of the highlights of the season so far.
Behind the scenes, Friday night training continues to go from strength to strength, with excellent attendance throughout the squad. We've welcomed several new players this year who have settled into the group brilliantly and are making fantastic progress.
At this stage of the season, much of our focus has been on developing strong foundations. In particular, we've been working hard on bowling accuracy, helping players understand the importance of line and length and building the consistency that creates pressure and takes wickets. The improvement across the squad has been noticeable, with players growing in confidence every week.
That development is also creating opportunities beyond softball cricket. Several Rivermaidens have stepped up to play hardball cricket, with Danushi becoming a regular feature and taking wickets along the way. Everyone at the club is incredibly proud of her achievements and the commitment she has shown. She is a great example of what can be achieved through hard work, regular training and a willingness to challenge yourself.
Cricket has not been the only thing bringing the squad together this year.
Earlier in the season, the team enjoyed a social evening of dinner and drinks, giving everyone the chance to catch up, build friendships and learn more about the Essex Softball Series competition. More recently, a group of Rivermaidens travelled to the Home of Essex Cricket, Chelmsford, to watch England Women take on India Women. Not only did the team enjoy a fantastic evening of international cricket, but wearing our Rivermaidens’ kit (kindly sponsored by Oakstone Contracting) got ourselves on television during the live broadcast.
The competitive season has now started with the Essex Softball Series, an inclusive county-wide competition designed to provide beginner and developing players with a fun, welcoming and competitive introduction to women's cricket. Teams play six-a-side matches using a softball, creating an accessible format that allows players of all experience levels to get involved while continuing to develop their skills.
The Rivermaidens made an excellent start at the opening festival hosted by Eastwood. Across three matches, the team recorded two victories and suffered just one narrow defeat. It was a strong all-round performance that leaves the Rivermaidens sitting second in the table and well placed for the remainder of the competition.
The next Essex Softball Series fixture takes place on 18th June at John Burrows Recreation Ground, Hadleigh, where the team will be looking to continue its positive start.
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the season so far is the atmosphere around the squad. Numbers are growing, confidence is increasing and players are developing at every level. There is a genuine sense of excitement around the group, with everyone supporting one another while maintaining a healthy competitive spirit.

Training takes place on Friday evenings at Rankin's Cricket Club, and we'd love to see more girls and women come along, make new friends, learn new skills and discover just how much fun cricket can be.
